Joint Letter Urging President Ramaphosa to Confront Extreme Inequality at the G20
We joined a collective appeal urging G20 leaders to confront extreme inequality and adopt measures that support people and the planet. The open letter, addressed to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, stresses that the richest 1% hold more wealth than 95% of humanity, fuelling poverty, deepening injustice and accelerating climate breakdown.
The signatories highlight how these patterns are not natural but the result of decisions that allow a system designed by and for the wealthy to shape public policy. They point to the growing burden placed on people facing rising living costs, hunger and heightened climate impacts, while the wealthiest contribute comparatively little. They also call on President Ramaphosa to use the G20 presidency to publicly champion taxing extreme wealth as a way to fund public services and climate action, framing this as essential for protecting shared futures.
