Celebrating 10 Years of PEHRC: A Decade of Collective Action Defending Public Education and Fighting Privatisation

On 4 December, we proudly joined members of the Public Education and Human Rights Coalition (PEHRC) from around the world to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our network, a global consortium united in defending the right to public education for all.
Ten years ago, as the rapid expansion of privatisation in education gained traction, civil society came together across regions to respond. That collective effort gave birth to PEHRC (previously known as the Privatisation in Education and Human Rights Consortium). Today, the coalition is stronger, more connected, and more determined than ever to uphold education as a public good and a human right.

A Decade of Commitment and Advocacy

Since its foundation, we have been an active member of PEHRC, working alongside allies to consistently raise concerns about the impact of privatisation in education. Together, we have advocated for free, quality, and publicly funded public education, grounded in human rights, equity, and inclusion.
The anniversary event was filled with joy, pride, and reflection. Members shared memories, celebrated achievements, and reaffirmed our shared commitment to the movement.

Looking Back, Looking Forward

As part of the celebration, our Programme Officer on the Right to Education, Juana Barragán Díaz, was invited to reflect on the coalition’s journey. In her interview, she discusses the growth and evolution of the global movement aimed at strengthening public education. She highlighted positive developments regarding the right to education since 2015, as well as the ongoing challenges and why we must continue to strengthen public education.
