Declaration Highlights the Need for Universal Public Services and Feminist Fiscal Policies

Declaration Highlights the Need for Universal Public Services and Feminist Fiscal Policies

On 10 June, in Santiago de Chile, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment, and Eradication of Violence against Women (Convention of Belém do Pará), we joined the Regional Follow-Up Articulation of the Convention to discuss the advances, challenges, and still unattended realities in the region.

The Articulation, composed of networks and civil society organizations from Latin America and the Caribbean, issued a Declaration highlighting the need to advance the interpretation of the text to address new and still unattended realities. Among them, our efforts prove to be successful in promoting universal public services that contribute to building a society of care and the assurance of the necessary resources to implement through feminist fiscal policies.

The Declaration, publicly read during the IX Conference of States Parties, also stressed the Convention's ongoing challenges in eliminating institutional violence and repairing victims of injustices by transforming structural conditions that sustain human rights violations.

Through these engagements, we seek to bridge the gaps between the feminist and human rights movements, bringing the agendas of public services and economic justice to the forefront of women's rights advocacy.
