Improving access to quality education in urban informal settlements: strategic litigation as a tool for advocacy -workshop #2
On 9th May 2023, GI-ESCR, in collaboration with the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Africa and the East African Centre for Human Rights (EACHRights), held another productive capacity-building exercise for the Mathare Community Education Taskforce which includes members of the community around Mathare informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya.
This workshop was built up on the community dialogue held on 13 February 2023. It aimed at deepening the community’s knowledge on the process of strategic litigation, the role of all the parties involved, challenges expected in such matters and strategies to overcome them. 28 community members actively participated in the workshop, drawing from their experience, insights, research and the previous session.
Moving forward, GI-ESCR, ICJ Africa, and EACHRights are collaborating with the community task force to undertake participatory action research. This activity aims to gather information to inform further advocacy, including potential litigation, to generate additional evidence of the negative impacts of the commercialisation of education, and strengthen the community members’ efforts to effect change towards free, quality, inclusive education for all. By doing so, we continue to uphold our commitment to combat the commercialisation of public services, such as education, and collaborate with communities and other organisations to advocate for adequately funded, good-quality public services.
