GI-ESCR participated in the Latin American and the Caribbean Climate Week

GI-ESCR participated in the Latin American and the Caribbean Climate Week

During October 23-27, GI-ESCR participated in the Latin American and the Caribbean Climate Week in Panamá which is an annual regional event that serves as a crucial platform for stakeholders in Latin America and the Caribbean to come together to fight climate change, and also to prepare their political positions towards COP.

The Latin American and the Caribbean Climate Week is a critical initiative to align regional efforts with international climate goals, such as the Paris Agreement, and to promote comprehensive climate action strategies tailored to the unique challenges of LAC.

As part of the iGST (Independent Global Stocktake), GI-ESCR engaged in discussions, workshops, strategic meetings, and events focused on a wide range of topics, from sustainable energy transition and environmental conservation to climate finance, human rights and fiscal policies. The events offered opportunities for building collective strength, strategies together, and plan common advocacy goals with the ultimate aim of accelerating the transition to a cero-carbon, resilient, and sustainable future in the region.

Vicente Silva, program officer at GIESCR, sustained that “in Panamá we engaged in pivotal discussions and actions to put human rights and progressive fiscal policies at the core of the just transitions process. To end fossil fuels and move towards renewables we need public resources at scales never seen before, and those resources should come from progressive taxation both at the national and international level”.

In particular, GI-ESCR participated in two side events related to climate change, gender equality, and innovative financing methods for a sustainable and equitable future.

The first event, titled 'Gender-just Transitions towards Equitable Societies,' aimed to foster a constructive dialogue on transformative pathways that prioritise the protection of human rights in the context of a just transition. This transition is vital for addressing the complex and intersecting challenges within our societies. It recognised the importance of ensuring that the impacts of climate change and environmental policies do not disproportionately affect vulnerable communities, especially women. Participants in this event included organisations and entities such as GI-ESCR, the Women and Gender Constituency, Feminist Action Nexus for Economic and Climate Justice, Red Latinoamericana por Justicia Económica y Social, and the United Nations Development Program. Together, we explored strategies and actions to ensure a more equitable and inclusive approach to addressing climate issues, making human rights a central concern.

The second event, titled 'Alternative Financing for an Energy and Just Transition,' delved into various sources of climate financing, going beyond traditional approaches. It examined innovative methods such as green taxation, debt swaps, international funds, and sustainable investment initiatives. The objective was to analyse the revenue potential of these approaches and showcase successful case studies from Latin America. By highlighting these innovative financial mechanisms, the event aimed to underline the tangible benefits they bring to sustainability initiatives and the fight against climate change. Notably, this event featured the participation of the Group of Climate Finance in Latin America (GFLAC), GI-ESCR and the Ministry of Environment of Chile, emphasising the significance of collaboration between government entities and regional climate finance groups.

These events were not only significant in promoting awareness and understanding of the critical issues related to climate change, gender equality, and sustainable financing but also in creating a platform for diverse voices and perspectives to come together. The dialogues and insights shared during these events will hopefully inspire positive changes and actions, driving us closer to achieving a more just and sustainable future for Latin America and the Caribbean.

As the next step in our commitment to addressing the climate crisis, GI-ESCR will actively participate in the upcoming COP28 (Conference of the Parties) and work with civil society organisations, government representatives, and other important players to promote climate and financial policies that prioritise human rights and gender equality as we transition to a more sustainable economy.
