‘Build Us More Schools!’ - The Quest for Quality Free Education in Mabatini and Ngei Wards of Mathare, Nairobi
This publication explores the critical challenges in accessing quality education in the urban informal settlements of Mathare, Nairobi. Despite Kenya's legal frameworks advocating the right to education, disparities remain pronounced, particularly in areas like Mabatini and Ngei, which lack public schools. The research, grounded in participatory-action methods, highlights issues such as the proliferation of low-cost private schools, inadequate teacher qualifications and unsafe school commutes. Recommendations emphasise the construction of public schools, rigorous monitoring, and the implementation of inclusive education policies to ensure equitable access to quality education for all children.
