Critical Minerals and Gender Equality: The Voices of the Women of Antofagasta and Atacama

Critical Minerals and Gender Equality: The Voices of the Women of Antofagasta and Atacama

This report, 'Critical Minerals and Gender Equality: The Voices of the Women of Antofagasta and Atacama', is the result of a participatory action research conducted in collaboration with FIMA and a group of ten women from the Antofagasta and Atacama regions of Chile. The project seeks to amplify the testimonies, experiences, challenges and perspectives of women living in areas affected by critical mineral extractive industries, specifically lithium mining.

The report aims to close the knowledge gaps on the gender-differentiated impacts of critical mineral extractive industries by focusing on the impacts on women’s rights at the local level, as well as their views on how to move towards a fairer and more sustainable future. In this sense, this study proposes an alternative vision to advance towards a mining-energy model aligned with human rights and gender equality.

Based on the testimonies and voices of the women from these territories, the report concludes with a series of recommendations designed to promote more democratic and sustainable governance of the mineral resources indispensable for countering the climate emergency.
