Women on the Frontlines of the Extraction of Transition Minerals - A Vision for a Just Future in Bikita, Zimbabwe
This report examines the gendered impacts of lithium mining in Bikita, Zimbabwe, focusing on the Vatombe community of Hanyanya Mountain. It highlights the adverse effects of expanding lithium extraction on women's rights, including threats to land ownership, water access, health, labour rights and participation in decision-making processes.
Despite being critical caretakers and subsistence farmers, women face displacement risks, increased caregiving burdens, and exclusion from economic opportunities and consultations about mining activities.
The report calls for a gender-responsive, just energy transition that protects human rights, ensures corporate accountability, and actively includes women in decision-making processes to address the inequalities perpetuated by extractive industries.
