Inequality

The defining issue of our times.

As highlighted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in her address to the United Nations Human Rights Council in March 2019, “inequalities in income, wealth, access to resources, and access to justice constitute fundamental challenges to the principles of equality, dignity and human rights for every human being.” In addition to being a cause of human rights deprivations, economic inequality is also the consequence of States’ failure to fulfil their obligations to ensure economic, social and cultural rights for all.

Economic inequality and how it intersects with human rights is an underlying theme across all of GI-ESCR’s work programmes. GI-ESCR has also developed a specific area of work to understand better and articulate the relationship between the two.
