International Day of Education
International Day of Education: GI-ESCR and MIDH presented the advocacy strategy for the implementation of the recommendations of their joint research report
To celebrate the International Day of Education on 24 January, GI-ESCR and its partner Mouvement Ivoirien des Droits Humains organised an online event for the presentation of the advocacy strategy based on the recommendations of their joint report on the impact of the privatisation and commercialisation of education in Côte d’Ivoire in light of the Abidjan Principles.
The event gathered 38 online participants, including representatives of the Parliament, the Ministry of Higher Education and the National Human Rights Council as well as education planning specialists and civil society organisations.
The general objective of the event was to present and strengthen the advocacy strategy and the specific objectives were to:
-
Disseminate to stakeholders the full research report (MIDH/GI-ESCR, 2022) and present the related advocacy strategy;
-
Strengthen the advocacy strategy by incorporating inputs from participants;
-
Build stakeholder buy-in for the advocacy strategy for a collective implementation; and
-
Respond to questions.
This event is a follow-up to the advocacy workshop held from 29th June to 1st July 2022 in Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, and where participants - who are key stakeholders with a good knowledge of the decision-making process - developed a draft advocacy strategy for the implementation of the recommendations of the joint report.
The advocacy strategy is premised on 4 pillars:
-
Harmonising national laws domestically, and internationally in line with the Abidjan Principles
-
Increasing in public spending on education as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product
-
Regulating private schools
-
Implementing the right to education in educational planning
The strategy, although still open for inputs, gives some preliminary guidance on how to engage with and influence education stakeholders including policy-makers, especially considering the upcoming reforms in the education sector on the update of the Education Act and the strengthening of the regulation of private schools to ensure access to quality education in Côte d’Ivoire.
