Submission to the Upcoming Report of the Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in the Context of Climate Change
Together with CambiaMO, the Center for Economic and Social Rights (CESR), EcoJustice, Global Witness, Resilient40, and Soluciones Estratégicas Sustentables, we jointly contributed a submission to the upcoming report of the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change. This joint effort highlights the urgent need to embed human rights at every stage of the renewable energy and critical minerals life cycle, from extraction to end-use, within the global energy transition.
Our joint submission addresses how the urgent shift to clean energy can avoid repeating the harmful practices of fossil fuel systems. We focused on States' responsibilities to protect human rights throughout the energy transition, from mineral extraction to energy production, while ensuring workers' rights and guaranteeing access to sustainable energy as a public good.
The submission advocates for energy systems that prioritise democratic participation, gender justice, and equitable access to sustainable energy as essential for human dignity.
