Principles for Gender Equality and Human Rights in the Energy Transition

Principles for Gender Equality and Human Rights in the Energy Transition

The Guiding Principles for Gender Equality and Human Rights in the Energy Transition are a collective effort, developed through a series of online consultations, an in-person workshop at the 15th AWID International Forum and rounds of revision with activists, practitioners and experts from around the world. The Principles outline a transformative vision for reshaping global energy systems through a human rights and gender equality lens. They highlight how current fossil fuel-based models perpetuate environmental degradation, social inequality and systemic discrimination, especially against women, Indigenous Peoples, and marginalised communities.

These are 18 interdependent principles rooted in international law, calling on States and non-State actors to phase out fossil fuels, ensure universal access to sustainable energy, guarantee gender equality, uphold labour and social rights, protect environmental defenders and promote inclusive decision-making. It urges governments to mobilise maximum available resources, cooperate internationally and avoid false solutions, advocating for a transition that is equitable, rights-based, and aligned with planetary boundaries.
