Over 120 civil society organisations sign statement supporting UN Special Rapporteur Léo Heller's report on privatisation of water

Today more than 120 civil society organisations signed a statement expressing support for the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, Mr Léo Heller, and his report on the human rights risks of privatisation.

The report, which was presented by Mr Heller to the UN General Assembly today, is the product of a year of in-depth independent research and consultation. In the report, Mr Heller details how numerous examples of water contamination, affordability crises and corruption scandals from around the world are linked to the privatisation of water and sanitation services. He also examines the role played by institutions such as the World Bank in driving privatisation in the Global South.

This statement is a recognition by over 120 organisations of the work that Mr Heller has undertaken throughout his mandate and of the particular importance of his work on privatisation. The sigatories call for States to continue to place their obligation to fulfil the human rights of all people above the financial interests of any actor.
